WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEDICARE v. MEDICAID

You may be asking why do you need Medicaid healthcare benefits when you already have Medicare?

Start with the following premise, Medicare is meant to get you back healthy.  It is set up for providing short-term care for Seniors. Long-term healthcare is paid for by you.

MEDICARE FACTS:

  • Medicare pays benefits for a maximum of 100 days in a nursing home.
  • Medicare does not pay for non-skilled assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), which are the majority of long-term care services.
  • YOU WILL PAY for long-term care services not covered by Medicare.

FLORIDA MEDICAID FACTS:

  • Florida Medicaid provides a myriad of programs providing long-term care for Seniors.
  • MEDICAID pays the largest share of long-term care services for Seniors age 65+;
  • Florida Medicaid has a waiver program that pays for long-term healthcare in the house via its Home & Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver program;
  • Florida Medicaid has a waiver program that provides assistance for assisted living care via its Assisted Living for Elderly Waiver (ALE) program;
  • Florida Medicaid pays for Institutional Care in nursing comes via its Institutional Care Program (ICP).

FLORIDA MEDICAID PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING LONG-TERM HEALTHCARE SERVICES FOR SENIORS:

  • Nursing Home Care;
  • Home & Community Based Care;
  • Home Adaptions for Accessibility;
  • Adult Companion Care;
  • Adult Day Care;
  • Transportation;
  • Home Delivered Meals;
  • Assistance with Medicare Premiums/co-pays;
  • Personalized Emergency Response services;
  • Dental;
  • Vision;
  • Hearing;
  • Training for unpaid caregivers (such as family members);
  • Physical therapy;
  • Medically necessary medical equipment;
  • Case managers;
  • Nutritional services; and
  • MORE …

HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR FLORIDA MEDICAID BENEFITS?

The Florida Medicaid program has FOUR ELEMENT TEST, assuming you meet the Medical “needs” criteria.  Whether you are in Tallahassee, Sumter County, Palm Beach, or Broward County, the test is the same.

  1. FLORIDA RESIDENCY

    You must be a Florida Resident at the time of application.

  2. US CITIZEN OR LEGAL RESIDENT ALIEN

    You must be a US Citizen or legal resident alien.

  3. ASSET TEST

    You must have less than $2,000 of countable assets as of the qualification period (certain assets are excluded); and

WHY SHOULD I HIRE THE CONTICELLO LAW FIRM FOR MY FLORIDA ELDER LAW NEEDS?

IT PAYS TO PLAN AHEAD

It is best to plan ahead so we can ensure that you avoid obstacles that might delay your qualification for Medicaid or VA healthcare services. This includes providing advice and guidance with your current assets, to help you avoid accidental gifts or transactions that might delay your ability to qualify for Medicaid.  Depending on the situation it may be appropriate to begin the Medicaid application process to enable you to sign onto some of the waiver wait lists for Medicaid Waiver healthcare programs.
